Battle At Barlow

Click photo to see the Barlow gallery.Wasn’t it odd that game after game of soccer was happening as ‘cross riders circumnavigated the track/soccer/football field at Barlow High - without spinning a wheel on that precious, pristine track surface so much as once. (Ok, I did see one bike with a flat tire cross the track.) Soccer moms and dads would walk through the ‘cross scene with this perplexed look on their faces. I heard several of them ask, “What is this?”

We got to practice our Spanish by listening to a soccer coach encourage a young goalie to jump onto a bleacher and then jump back down: arriba y abajo. Arriba y abajo. It didn’t look easy - the steps, not the Spanish. The expression on that goalies’ face was worth the 23.4-mile drive to the Battle at Barlow.

But that has nothing to do with ‘cross. The railroad-tie infused creek bank did. I’d like to see Joan Rivers climb that bank, with or without a bike on her shoulder. It sounded like the battle scenes from the movie Braveheart as riders careened down the hill, across the bridge and up the bank - with a choice of routes up, up and away. Even Joan Rivers can’t make that kind of noise.

Energy is building. Eric Tonkin was there. The black and white kit team whose name I can’t pronounce debuted, Jeremy Dunn rode hard in his mighty fine Embrocation kit. The lion flapped in a mighty wind above the HUP staging area.

Cyclocross class tonight at PIR; Alpenrose Cyclocross at Night Wednesday; Oregon Manifest Friday night, Saturday and beyond; Cross Crusade season kickoff race at Alpenrose Sunday.

Is this the life, or what? Joan Rivers should be here, with a red carpet.

- Mike

I'm sure you've all heard one of Joan's most famous quotes, “Liars, hysterectomy didn't improve sex life!” published in the book Six-Word Memoirs, but it's also the title of Chapter Forty-Eight of THE H WORD, a new book about hysterectomy.
