Click the image to go to the gallery. To call it a race is innacurate. We stood poised before an undulating dirt track at PIR after an hour-long class where we learned to embrocate, get on and off a bike, carry a bike securely, jump over barriers and to be good sportspeople.
The tension was palpable. Some of us had never raced. One of us cut the tension, and near-darkness, this way: “Remember, once in your life, you were the fastest sperm.” That was, of course, at the start of the men’s race.
Three laps later it was over. The Monday before, another rider who was even older than me, said, “This is just like being a kid again.” And so it was.
Dylan Van Weelden, of Yakima, emceed the evening and coached us, Jeremy Dunn and Joe Staples, of team Embrocation taught us about embrocation - a liquid used for rubbing on the body to relieve pain from sprains and strains and generally warm the muscles. A host of other notable riders guided us through the night. Thank you.
There’s one more Monday night of classes left. Check it out at http://www.yakima.com/cycling/school_of_cross.html
I’m off to apply some embrocation.

Love the fourth picture, it's like a time lapse of all the steps in barrier technique. Just need to show one more person to the left doing the remount.
