It wasn't for the weak of heart or mind. So much energy unleashed, we swear that Katie Compton unleashed a jet stream and the battle between Ryan Trebon and Tim Johnson was like making a cat's cradle with rubber bands.

And now it's over. What a day of racing, and photography. We got to share the first three days' photographs with racers, friends and families numbering in the hundreds at Deschutes Brewery to close out the day. It was like being in a Mayan temple, except cyclocross was the guiding light and beer comprised the stone walls.

We can't wait for today, the final day of this year's championships. Come back for more -photography, we can't offer beer - and stay tuned for Dirty Pictures II, our book representing the year in Portland's cyclocross scene - and Nationals of course.

Day two in bend National Cyclocross championships

Click on the image above to go to the galleryWe're back at it.

If it isn’t one kind of slippery, it’s another. We came from racing in our hometowns, where we slip on mud or sand or moist roots or rocks or off-camber grass or . . . And now, we’re here in Bend, joined by the slippery nature of snow. And we’re loving it, of course, playing guests to the fine folks who invited us into their backyard to play. We can’t wait for the racing and parties and slipperiness of the next three days. As each rider passed over a frozen section of mud, it was as if they were jiggling a fat belly.

The feeling of the day was different in general, if not quite like the earth moving. This was not home town ball; the big boys and girls were in town. So it was less fun, there were no outrageously fun costumes and I didn't see anyone help another rider just because it's a nice thing to do - except a bevy of folks who helped the guy who dislocated his shoulder, ouch - and god forbid a kiddie ride in such thin air.

Lacking the usual edge, we got instead some kick ass racing. Those guys were fast. Even Ryan, Molly and Shawn got smoked. Sorry about that.

We hope to see you in Bend, where the weather will be even colder and the racing even hotter.

Our Photos on the walls of tbd in Bend

If you're in Bend Friday night, TBD Gallery is the place to be. Well, unless you were on a bike, pushing through the muck. Ok, maybe that is fun, too.

More fun was watching about 100 dogs and their leash holders run, walk and sometimes crawl a section of the Kruger Farm course. It's almost Thanksgiving so going over hill and dale was appropriate, to get to a dog treat.

But seriously, how did wheels continue to turn. Some didn't as the concrete-like mud gumbo piled up around brakes like an unchecked cancerous growth. Many had to stop and pull the mud from what were supposed to be moving parts.

Rain then sun. Gusts of battering wind then blissful calm. Water then fire. Throw in a squash and it was a great day.

Barton Park, the last crusade

Click on the image above to go to the gallery.

Cross Crusade 2009 wound down with a bang and splash and a slurp at Barton Park, the place famous for being hard-core and a bit frightening no matter where they put the course. Over mud and under gray skies, there was a lot of brave racing going all day, most notably among the Hot Shots at the very end. Molly and Sean and Erik treated us to a race that earned its Elite label, ending with an all-out, over-the-top last run-up that left Molly in the mud. You can travel far and wide and still not see such fine athletes live at the edge of their strength and skill -- and we can count them among our friends and neighbors. Cool. The crowd’s admiration and appreciation raised the temperature over the park several degrees. Whew.

It’s hard to believe the end is almost here, just the Grand Prix and Nationals left, a fast forward season if ever there was one.

We’ll be at Nationals, big time, with a gallery showing our work from the season and slide shows of the weekend’s races at a venue you’ll come to know and love.

A massive run-up on a pine needle slush mash of iced rock was matched with a brake-squealing downhill for a course that will have competitors scheming studded tires and more hill-running for a second race, planned Saturday, Nov. 28.
